 Roommate Advice and Tips

Top 10 Questions you need to ask Every New Roommate

Moving to college is one of the most exciting parts of a young person’s life. It is a time when young adults can finally get out of their homes and start experiencing life on their own.

With these new freedoms come new people and places. Instead of sharing your living space with family and good friends, you will suddenly find yourself sharing a small space with someone you don’t know. It may be scary, but this definitely isn’t a bad thing. You never know, this new roommate of yours could turn out to be your new best friend.

Even if you aren’t looking for a new best friend, it is a good idea to get to know your new roommate and some facts about them before trying to live together. Sharing with each other is a good way to break the ice and define each other’s definitions of respect.

Here is a list for you of the Top 10 questions that you need to ask every roommate before you embark on a journey of living with them; Good Luck:

1)       What are your expectations for school?

Asking this question will give you insight as to what your roommate is really doing at school. You will be able to learn if they are serious about their studies or if they are just there to have a good time. This will give you a good clue as to if you should be expecting many loud, long nights or quiet study sessions at home. Make sure that both of your expectations are out on the table.

     2)   How do you typically handle stress?

Everyone handles stress differently. It is a good idea to know if your new

roommate deals with the hard parts of life with a 10 mile morning run or a

           30 pack of beer everyday.

      3)  What are your interests?

It is good to know what your roommate likes to do with their down time or what they find cool in life. You may find that you have a lot in common or that your new roommate spent the beginning years of their life robbing banks. Either way, you should be aware of what you are getting yourself into.

4)       How do you sleep best?

Out of respect for each other, the topic of sleeping should be breached. It would be wise to know if your roommate minds sleeping while you have a light burning and music playing unless you want to get an alarm clock to the head one day.

5)       Are you a morning or a night person?

Everyone knows that this is one of the most important things that you need to know.

6)       How O.C.D. are you?

This may not be the most p.c. way to ask a question, but you need to know whether your new roomie is a self-declared slob or a neat freak to the fullest.

7)       What are your feelings on overnight guests of the opposite or same

sex?

This type of question will help clear the air on any boundaries expected not to be crossed by your new living partner.

8)       Do you think that sharing is caring?

Before you go borrowing you new roommates perfume or school supplies, make sure that they are into first. You should always ask before taking anyway, but it is best if you two decide that type of situation together.

9)       What types of food do you eat?

This may seem like a silly question, but it is not. There is nothing like getting glaring stares from a vegan while you bite into your medium-raw cooked steak.

10)     Do you have any allergies I should know about?

As much as you may want to, killing your roommate is not an option. Find out if the fresh flowers that remind you of home, your favorite incense, or that perfume you love, will give your roommate a rash and hives.

And remember, even though some of these questions may seem like common sense, they are definitely questions that you want answered. Your college experience should be a wonderful one, and as is the case with most things in life, the best experiences often begin at home.
