 College Advice Every Student Needs

The Absolute Best Ways to NOT Graduate College – And How to Avoid Them

When students walk through the door on their first day to college, it’s doubtful that any of them think, “I wonder how I can sabotage my own education and make sure I never make it out of here with a degree.” But the sad reality is that a lot of college students never graduate, no matter what their intentions were at the start. As sad as that may sound, there’s no need to despair. You don’t have to be one of those students. In fact, if you follow this list of advice, you will be able to avoid every mistake that most college dropouts make.

Mistake #1: Choosing the Wrong Major

If you’re going to go to college, you should make sure you know what you want to do with your life. Plan out your life goals and choose a degree that will support them. After all, a degree in physics won’t do a potential journalist much good and a degree in philosophy won’t be helpful to a future doctor. Be sure to figure your life goals into your degree plan so you don’t wind up as a permanent college student always switching degrees, or worse, a college student who simply drops out to avoid the extra time.

Mistake #2:  Applying Yourself Halfheartedly

When it comes to college, you should give everything your all. Whether you’re taking the hardest course of your life or a class you could pass without doing anything, try to get the most out of it. You never know when a previous class will build on a future class, so it’s best to approach each class with the same kind of drive. Then even in the worst case scenarios, you’ll at least have the satisfaction of knowing you always did your best – and that will really take you a long way in college and in life.

Mistake #3:  Giving Up When Times Get Hard

Every college student encounters at least one course that makes them want to walk out the door and hop on the next plane to Honduras. But when it comes to hard classes, when things get tough, you just have to make yourself tougher. Don’t let everything you’ve done go to waste just because you’re not a superstar in one course. Instead, try harder, get help when you need it, and force yourself to work your way through it.

Mistake #4:  Using College for Fun

Though college is definitely a fun time, it does serve a greater purpose than expanding your social circle. Go out and have a good time, but don’t forget to devote time to your school work. If you miss your first class everyday because you’re still recovering from a wild time the night before, it’s safe to say you’re going to have a lot of courses to repeat.

Those are the four biggest mistakes that college students make. Avoid the mistakes those before you have made and you’ll be amazed at how easy it is to graduate college and get the degree you’ve always wanted!
